BACK TO THE ROOTS: Group A Revival im Rahmen der TOP Events 2027

The Group A Revival: A New Chapter in the Touring Car Golden Era

The revival of Group A classes in a dedicated race is another step towards cultivating the finest eras of motorsport within the Touring Car Golden Era. Following the DRM, STW, and CLASS ONE Revivals, the GROUP A REVIVAL is the logical next step for an idea that began with us in 2016. It reached its provisional climax at the 2018 DTM finale, where we made history with a grid featuring eight superstars. Even today, the cover photo stands as a testament to that moment and still gives us goosebumps. Below is all the background information and details.

After the founding of the Touring Car Classics (TWC) in 2016, the first racing series for former DTM vehicles was born. The TWC quickly became the shooting star of the historic racing scene, rapidly making its way onto the stage of the DTM platform at the time, and ultimately to top historic events. It was the perfect stage for the world’s most popular touring cars.

A Split with Positive Consequences

Despite a highly successful 2018 season and a rapidly rising trend barometer, a rift occurred behind the scenes within our own ranks for a variety of reasons. This resulted in a copy of the TWC emerging in 2019 under a new name, splitting the grid. The Class 1 cars transferred almost entirely to the "new" series, while the Group A cars largely remained with the TWC.

To ensure track rental costs remained affordable, the TWC expanded its grid to include the popular cars of the German Racing Championship (DRM). This was highly well-received by the market and led—via DTM Classic—to today's Touring Car Golden Era format. Today, this format enriches historic highlight events, delivering full grids and exciting top-tier motorsport thanks to a homogenous class structure.

Cultivating Touring Car Eras as a Key to Success

Full entry lists provide the flexibility and resources needed to organize and highlight different eras. Consequently, the DRM Revival was created for the 1971–1981 era, followed by the STW Revival for Super Touring Cars from 1993–2000, and most recently, the CLASS ONE Revival for Class 1 racing machines from 1993–2020. Each has been a resounding success. Even a dedicated Porsche Classic Cup was introduced to ensure fair competitive conditions and to prevent grids from becoming overly diluted.

Unabated Competitor Interest and a Generational Shift

Despite an oversupply of market options and alternatives, the Touring Car Golden Era continues to enjoy sustained interest from competitors. A reliable calendar, a tight class structure, and, above all, a strong driver community form the foundation for this success.

With the extension of FIA Appendix K up to the year 2000, international ex-DTM and Super Touring cars have also come into the focus of organizers—especially since a generational shift has occurred among competitors, turning the spotlight toward younger vehicles. The most recent example is "Auto Peter", who have been promoting a Group A class strictly in accordance with FIA HTP since this year. While they offer top-tier motorsport with flawless organization and plenty of track time, it takes place largely away from the public eye, highly decentralized, and for horrendous entry fees—making it not to everyone's taste.

The Group A Revival as the Common Denominator for All Involved

To give owners of Group A vehicles more space once again without having to run major experiments, the numerous requests for a dedicated race are now being answered. We are reviving the winning formula of the early TWC years.

The first top-tier events reacted with immediate enthusiasm, paving the way for a routine implementation in 2027. The beauty of it: Nothing changes in the existing format of the Touring Car Golden Era. In other words, there are only winners.

Look forward to joining us in the continuation of an idea that will make everyone's eyes light up—just as it always has.

More details regarding the calendar, class structure, and format will follow shortly.
